Fire, with Ernie Pyle

The Fire: this picture features journalist Ernie Pyle (left/back) with two lads from the local area. Pyle was investigating the fire for an article.

The two boys have been tentatively identified as Donald E. Long and Robert C. Long.

Ned Watts

Ned Watts, (98) talks about life in the old days as a Perry County offical, the fire and the moonshine.

He died about a year later.

Wanda Wallace Martin

Wanda Wallace Martin, with a picture of her mother. Wanda let tour groups (for one day) through the burning hills. She quit after one day, because it even though she had "been around the mine fires all (her) life", it scared her to go so deliberately close.

"We'd get a dime or a quarter for just a hand drawn map showing them where they could see it actually burning," he says."
